Since I couldn't find a thread dedicated to this game series, and since the new game got announced a little while ago, I decided to take the initiative and start the thread myself (being a huge DMC fan ever since the demo that came with RE:Code Veronica X on the PS2).

This is an open thread where you can talk about your thoughts and feelings on the series, theories of the story, your favorite moments in the game (via cutscene or gameplay), games that were inspired by DMC, or your thoughts on the information and rumors for DMC5.

Also, I'll be holding an open door policy on the reboot DmC, despite my personal hatred for the game. If you like that game, that's fine, but don't ever tell me the game is objectively better than DMC3 or 4. I will destroy you with examples, comparisons, and mechanical detailing as to why that's wrong. Don't make me go full fantard. (Note, this is only if you say DmC is OBJECTIVELY better than DMC3 or 4, not if you say you prefer it. There is a difference.)

With that said, LET'S ROCK!  :pcdiabolical

I have only played DMC 3, way back when I had a PS2. Definitely didn't like it at first, it's frustrating when the first boss is kicking your ass over and over, and Cerberus was even worse, I have no idea how an impatient teenager like me at the time got around to playing it to the end.

Looking forward to playing the other games I haven't yet (excluding DmC), especially the original DMC. I was surprised when I learned it started out as a concept for Resident Evil 4, but was so far from being anything Resident Evil that it just turned into a new IP, and people say that can be seen if you play it.

So with that said I can't point out which is my favorite when I have only played a single game. Devil May Cry 3 is definitely awesome though, and I learned so much more about it from watching a few videos about it, such as how great the storytelling and characterization is, and the more I think about it, the better it sounds.

A dumb thing that I thought was genius about Devil May Cry 3 was that, at the starting cutscene of each chapter, the number of that chapter could was shown somewhere in the cutscene in the background, so I would watch each one to look for it. Easter eggs are great.

DMC is pretty much the only brawler/hack and slash game I know of that I actually find all that interesting. Every other hack and slash/brawler game either goes the route of just having you mash X a million times, or they have a bunch of pre set combos that have to be pressed in a specific way. DMC, however, has a really cool system where you have a bunch of weapons that you have access to at all times, all of which do completely different things and can more or less be cancelled into each other. This gives the combat a much more open ended feeling to it, allowing you to more or less do whatever you want and create your own combos, unlike other games where the combos are pretty much all scripted and set by the designer. Wanna do melee into launcher into guns? Sure. Wanna do guns into launcher into grapple into melee? Why not! The sky is the limit with the combat mechanics of DMC. I'm just simply a huge fan of games with open ended systems that allow the player to express themselves instead of just following the instructions of the developers (which is also why I find Smash so much more interesting than traditional fighting games)

And of course, the fact that the games have an unparalleled sense of style and charisma certainly doesn't hurt either. You will never see a more creative use of a pool table in an action scene outside of a Jackie Chan movie

Well said my good friend, but since you're still new to the series and have only played DMC3, might I suggest you try out the HD collection (preferably on the PS3, as it does have changes, but non of the visual downgrades the 360/XBONE/PS4 versions have. If you don't have a PS3, though, the other versions are serviceable), so you can try out DMC1 (however, please try not to mind the terrible swimming sections of that game... Even die-hard fans of the first game admit the swimming was extremely flawed.) I, however, wholeheartedly suggest you skip DMC2. It had some interesting ideas, some of which were later pulled into DMC3 and 4, but it was overall a mediocre action title, let alone a DMC game...

Also, did you play the original black lable DMC3 on PS2, or the red label "Special Edition", because there will be a difference in content and difficulty between the two.

Oh, and if you do have a next gen console/PC, pick up DMC4: Special Edition while you're at it. The story is quite trash (especially compared to DMC3) and the backtracking can get annoying, but it's very fun and the gameplay itself is AMAZING.

Speaking of which, this whole opening action scene in general is probably the best and most underrated cutscene ever in a video game (at least in my opinion, rivaled only by the spaceship scene in Super Smash Bros Brawl and probably some MGS ones I can't think of at the moment)

Everything about this is amazing, from the part where Dante goes for the Pizza instead of the gun, to the creativity of the action (surfing on a dead demon corpse while shooting at the other demons and the aforementioned pool table moment), to the quotable one liners ("THIS PARTY'S GETTIN CRAZY, LET'S ROCK!"). Add the fact that it serves as the perfect introduction to the character as well as the game in general, and it's just amazing

Even better is the fact that it establishes that Dante is quite the massive screw up. Every time he tries to do something cool, he almost always follows it with something dumb or have a stroke of bad luck.

Case and point: immediately after yelling "This party's gettin' CRAZY! Let's ROCK!", he pushes the button on the jukebox, which doesn't work, pushes it multiple times, looks totally lame, and has to super Fonzie it just to get it going. And there are SO many more instances where he does something cool immediately before something lame happens to him. It really builds on the comedy and emphasizes that the world actually kinda hates him.

(Oh I also forgot the opening of Fallout 1, Master Chief giving the Covenant back their bomb in Halo 2, and The Ark cutscene in Halo 3 for best cutscenes in games. Man, there really should be a best cutscenes in games thread, even though there kinda sorta already was)

If you wanna talk absolutely pitch perfect openings, I don't think anything can top Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver's intro cutscene in my eyes. Even though it was made at the tail end of the 90s, it still looks utterly BEAUTIFUL in a haunting, gothic way today.

But anyway, yeah, save that for another thread entirely. This is the Devil May Cry thread.

I still strongly suggest you play 1 and 4, especially before you tackle 5 when it comes out.

And, as a side suggestion, I'd also recommend you check out Onimusha 3, God Hand, and Chaos Legion, all of which have that "Capcom's Devil May Cry blood" in them (especially since the 3rd mystery character is supposed to utilize an ability not unlike the main character does in Chaos Legion...)

I got the original edition at first, and later the special edition. If I remember correctly, the biggest changes in the latter were the jester battles, being able to play as Vergil, and the bloody palace. The difficulty was also a factor, it seems, something about how the original was originally harder, I don't really remember there being a difference, maybe I just thought I got better. :monster:

Sounds about right, but yeah, the difficulty was changed for the initial release. Easy, Normal, and Hard all had their difficulties jacked up as a cheeky little "take that" for people that complained about DMC2 being too easy. Then, when they re-released it, they renamed all of the difficulties to Normal, Hard, and Very Hard, and added a new Easy mode at the tail end (even though the box claims to add in Very Hard). Only DMD (Dante Must Die) and the gimmick mode Heaven or Hell went untouched.

Anyway, new topic;

What was your favorite/adored moment or mechanic (aka, cutscene or gameplay) in any of the Devil May Cry games? Yes, even the Reboot (I'll do my best to keep my trap shut about it)

Definitely the finale vs. Arkham in DMC 3, I spent most of the game thinking how fucking cool Vergil was, and seeing him finally fighting side-by-side with Dante was like the one thing I had been waiting for the entire game, shame they turned on each other again, but I guess that was the whole point.

As for mechanic, definitely the "style" meter, especially some puzzles that involved rewards being locked behind a barrier (I think it was a barrier) that would only be destroyed after you reached a certain level in it. Not my own words, but it definitely encourages players to vary their moveset to pull off some cooler combos.

Yeah, that was an incredibly awesome moment in DMC3. Actually, there are some awesomesauce modders out there that have figured out a way to replicate that mechanic in the PC version of DMC4: SE, allowing you to play as Dante and Vergil simultaneously. The side by side combat is actually quite nuts (especially so, since Dante has access to all of his style moves).

And, yeah, I know what you're referring to. I guess you could call them barriers, but, if I remember correctly, they're called "Combo Adjudicators". Though, I wasn't the biggest fan of them in DMC3, simply because they were locked to specific weapons, and if you didn't have the weapon on hand, you couldn't grab the prize inside. With that said, yes, they were a brilliant idea to encourage experimentation and moveset discovery.
