I can see why they'd think that... you're not disabled, though. At least not permanently. Did you explain that it would go away after about five weeks?

No, I just left. Even if it were permanent wouldn't mean I'm stupid, would it?

Of course not. Society isn't perfect, though, and that's odd considering we're all pastel-colored-
Ember, no. Stop that.
Ember rubbed her head.
I mean, no it doesn't mean that at all. I honestly can't believe ponies would say such things to you. You look like a perfectly normal mare who can take care of herself just fine... even with a minor setback.

Why, thanks for the vote of confidence.

She was looking through cupboards for a teapot. She was sure there had been one somewhere yesterday.

But that's not really the point. I mean, I can take it for a moon or two, if ponies think I'm stupid that's their loss. But does everypony who ends up with a wheelchair get that? And how about those who don't get better? They're not stupid either just because their legs don't work.

It's certainly not nice, but there's nothing we can do about that, sadly.

There must be some way I can use my position to do something positive. Go around in the wheelchair and impress ponies with my intelligence and wit?

Still no teapot, but here were some mugs. She put two down on the table and backed out into the waiting room to take some tea bags from the tray there.

I'll need to find something to occupy my days anyway.

Walking around for about a month? Hmm... at least you have Mikey and, uh...
She tried to recall the farrier's name. No such luck.

Yeah.

She should probably show some interest in her guest instead of just parading her own complaints.

So what do you do when you're not a nurse?

Oh well, that wasn't important anyway.
Oh, well, I like to take walks around Ponyville, maybe even sit out in the park and enjoy nature.

Your brother.

Lemon was aware this wasn't going well, but there'd be no good way to call it off until the tea she'd offered had been brewed and drunk.

.. or, anything else you'd like to discuss?

Oh, you know, the usual. What's his name, what's he like, his talent, does he live in Ponyville too.

The water was boiling now. She took the mugs and filled them.

Sugar?

Sure. Umm, well, his name's Flame Spark, and he used to live with me here in Ponyville until recently. He's now back in Canterlot, my hometown.

Oh, you're from Canterlot? What made you come here?

Lemon brought back the mugs of hot water and then fetched a bowl of sugarcubes together with the tea bags.

Well, a few years ago, my brother and I decided to come here to Ponyville. While we loved Canterlot, and our family that lived there, I just wanted to live in a more simple town. Ponyville seemed perfect, and it was only a train ride away. My brother was basically my guardian at the time, so of course he came with me.

I'm afraid I never really appreciated Canterlot myself. I've been there once or twice as a tourist, but ...

How long ago was that? You don't appear to need a guardian.

Her ears folded back as she looked down.
It was about three years ago. Thing is... back then, since I was a filly, I have been largely dependent on my brother to care for me. I... didn't know how to take care of myself. Looking back, a mare my age at the time having their older brother caring for them like a parent would a child sounds pretty stupid, doesn't it?

Depends on how much older he is. My brothers, for example, are twelve years apart -- if something had happened to our parents ten or fifteen years ago, Spar could easily have found himself doing the job of a parent.

Oh yes, special indeed...
Ember sighed.
He knew how to take care of himself for about eleven years, but in that same time, I didn't. So he took care of me. I didn't really have a choice but to look up to him. I don't know what I'd be now if it weren't for him.
