Didn't we already see RD and co. go up against the Wonderbolts in the Equestria Games earlier this season? Seriously, the beginning of this ep felt like déjà vu...

But yeah, I liked this episode a lot. I was afraid there was gonna be some dues ex machina moral again this ep, but Spike wasn't satisfied that saving everyone erased the two earlier failures from his brain until he successfully lit those fireworks at the end. I was definitely feeling sympathy for him when he was singing that national anthem. I get that really bad when characters are embarrassing themselves in shows; I couldn't watch, but I listened, heh...

I loved Ms Harshwhinny's "Mr. the Dragon!" line though. It got me every time she said it. I usually don't like it when they repeat their jokes that frequently, but for this... maybe it's because it fits her character so well. I love that frosty, proper pony. She is awesome. I also like Pinkie Pie's line about Twilight sitting next to her and freaking out about the metal count. "I'll show you how!"

It is just me, or is every episode for the past several episodes heralded as "One of the best of this season?" They can't all be the best, guys; some of them have to be the worst.

I'm glad they didn't have Twilight try to keep up the lie with Spike.

Yeah, that would have been a stale plot even from the beginning.

"Rainbow Falls" were a qualification match; both teams qualified.

Each of them can be the best to someone.

Spike gave a pretty good moral even if he didn't write it down

Seems like the reception is polarizing. It seems like people are happy with what actually happened with Spike, but its how the Games didn't get much focus that splits some hairs.

Who cares about the reception? Srsly. You worry about fandom status too much. :)

To be honest, after reading what happens, I'm not that surprised by this. The Games got a year and half of buildup, but at the same time...sounds like the episode itself would be something I'd like.

Oh yeah, okay. It seems like a long time ago now that that episode aired. Thankee for the clarification.

NO. There are universally best and worst episodes! No differing opinions allowed! (But yeah; I think I've kinda thought "This is a really good episode!" seen someone call an episode "one of the best of the season" and then thought "Yeah... but what about every other episode that was really good?" Maybe I am not critical enough.)

I couldn't at Spike stumbling through that anthem.

Overall I'm afraid this was a bit too much cringe comedy for me to enjoy fully.

Rewatch notes:

So, in the VIP box just below the princesses at the opening ceremony we find: Saddle Arabian delegates, Prince Blueblood, Fancy Pants and Fleur .. and then the mayor of Ponyville and a cherry farmer from Dodge Junction!?!

Twilight is the only princes who doesn't have fancy hoof- and neckwear.

The Cloudsdale entrance procession consists of one (1) flag carrier and three (3) Wonderbolts, before Shining Armor announces Ponyville. If every pony can compete in only one event, how did they manage to win 36 medals?

Nice to see Rarity must have designed some better uniforms for the athletes.

Wait, what event did Derpy compete in? If she was ready to jump on the aerial relay team, but didn't, and she can't be in two events?

Luna's quite the Princess Tactless here.

Ponyville seems to be the only team who still have their flag carriers with them at "Let the games begin!"

Why is Fluttershy not there in the scene after the opening ceremony?

After Twilight tells Spike she lit the torch for him, he is approached by a crystal stallion with a strangely high-pitched voice. Did the VA think that was a mare?

The security guard who stops Rarity on the way into the aerial relay event also appeared as the bouncer in Toils.

After Spike saves the day he's met by the Mane 6 and the princesses. All of which including Rainbow Dash stand on the ground, except that Twilight hovers on wings! Quite unusual.

This episode was alright, but I just really find the character of Spike, and Spike episodes by extension, to be really uninteresting and boring. I've already talked about this, but I guess I can say it again: what bothers me about Spike's character is that he seems to switch between two character types between episodes, and one of those character types is lame and annoying

Sometimes, Spike is portrayed as Twilight's more level headed assistant, and the only sane man (or dragon, whatever) that always points out the obvious problems that no one else seems to notice, usually though snark. This is the more enjoyable version of Spike, an interpretation of him that's enjoyable and funny, manely because he tends to say what the audience is most likely thinking and his snark usually makes a few good lines now and then. This is the kind of Spike we see in Lesson Zero, sort of in It's About Time, and his great scene in Simple Ways

However, in other episodes Spike is portrayed as a naive little kid who has no idea what he's doing, and this is the version of Spike that's lame. He becomes the "little kid" character of the show, the type of character that is constantly being annoying and doing things that he would never do in the episodes where he's not an idiot. This is the Spike we see in...well, a TON of episodes, but most notably Spike At Your Service, Dragon Quest and Owls Well That Ends Well

Basically, I like THIS Spike

Not THIS Spike

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

The problem with this, other than the fact that it makes Spike feel kind of inconsistent, is that the naive little kid interpretation is WAY more common than the snarky only sane man. Every single one of his own episodes portrays him like this. And the reason for that is because, well, a snarky smart guy is not really a type of character that works as the focus of an episode. I feel like Spike does not really work as a mane character of a story, he works best as a side character, which is really what he is anyway

Admittedly though, this is one of the Spike episodes that I actually enjoyed a little bit, though similarly to Dragon Quest, I enjoyed it because of world building and the spectacle of it all, and I merely tolerated Spike

On the fence about this episode for the same reason many others are.

I LIKED the Spike part of it but at the same time, they've been building up the Equestria Games since last season and... we hardly got to see them. Just seems a bit... off

Also if no one else is going to do it, I might set the clip of Spike singing the anthem to this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73ZsDdK0sTI

It's the first thing I thought of XD

One thing I did like was how the camera work made clear that Twilight would rather have been with her friends in the stands than sit on a throne by herself in the royal box.

That's the kind of thing I wish they'd done more of throughout the season. But somehow they've gotten better at it after the easter break.

I care as much about the Equestrian Games and their setup as much as I do about the Olympics.

................... Wait, there's a winter olympics? And who in the hell is Michael Phelps?

Something else I noticed: Soarin looks awful here. What's up with that? Has Spitfire been pushing him too hard? Poor guy.

This was a pretty good Spike episode all things considered. A bit painful to see him get embarrased when he has to sing the Cloudsdale Anthem. But ya know.

The only thing that's really kind of disappointing. Is that all this build up from episodes like Games Ponies Play, Flight to the Finish, and Rainbow Falls. All ended up to it being just a sub-plot to an episode mainly about Spike more so then the actual games. For those who like the Olympics and what they represent, that seems kinda jarring when you would think they'd have more focus on the Games then they actually did. All I can say is, oh well. :-\

But the finale is next week. And I'm so excited for it. ^^

It's gonna take two viewings to really get this episode, panic attacks kept happening when I tried to watch it.

That said...my first impression was actually pretty great. The overall tone and moral was something I could DEEPLY relate to, and something I see resonating with quite a few people.

Even the awkward moments weren't as bad as I thought, and I hate those embarassing moments most of the time.

And yeah...this episode already has heat for more or less skipping the Games after so much build...and I admit that I don't think that's how they should have done it. But I really hope it doesn't negate the good things that happened in this episode for some.

Probably going to be a 9/10.

This was a pretty good episode. :D

I liked that they didn't drag out the thing about Spike thinking he had psychic powers and just had Twi confess that she was the one that lit the torch. I found it pretty hard to watch Spike attempt to sing the Cloudsdale anthem but other than that it was pretty good. Pinkie's "nailed it" line was great. :D

So Blueblood makes his first reappearance since season 1. :D

I liked seeing Twi in a proper Royal position and the little wave to Cadance was cute. Also I love that all the Princesses are there for the consoling Spike scene. It was kinda hilarious seeing Spike be all "nah I'm not important" to the nine most important ponies in all of Equestria whom he is close personal friends with. :P

Archery is a officially a thing in Equestria and they have magic ice arrows. :-X

Epic fire breath vs ice cloud of death, yay! ^-^

Derpy! :derpyohhaidere2

I like that they explained why none of the unicorns could at least try to help lift the ice cloud and it actually makes sense since any unicorn could potentially use their magic to cheat. :D

Miss Harshwiny calls Spike Mr Thedragon.

Harshwiny: "I am giving you the signal now! This is the signal that signals you to act! SIGNAL!!!"

Um I think that's everything I wanted to mention. So yeah, good moral, good episode and Spike gets some love. :D

I'm now expecting a tweet from Cathy Weseluck saying something like "they didn't actually tell me what the tune would be before we were recording and it played in my headphones".

Something someone pointed out on FIM Fiction. Look closely at Blueblood's Cutie Mark:

Now compare it to his actual cutie mark:

(BTW, the cutie mark he has there? Fancypants's. Makes me wonder if Fancy disguised himself as Celestia's nephew to get a premium seat)

I have no reason for pointing this out aside from the fact that it's silly and great to laugh at.

Except that Fancy himself is sitting right in front of the prince.
