That is a great moment from the first ME1, with that said though, it was also great to see them making a return appearance in ME3.

Hats from Team Fortress 2

There will never be a greater moment then finding your first hat (not counting gibus and promos)
Back in my day we would have had this thread 404'd already.

With all that said and done, I do hope that with its revival however more games companies are will to take a few more risks. The market at present is oversaturated with crap as it is *game-industry-whine-rant*.

Yeah, my biggest hope is that it kicks off more tactical squad based games. There's only so many times I can replay Fallout Tactics, Gladius, and the UFO series.
Now I pulled myself together, had a little chat
With my empty bottle, and this little cat
He'd been hiding, he'd been there for a while
Well I told him how I missed you how you made me feel
And even though that cat wasn't real
He cheered me up and he made me smile

“If cats looked like frogs we'd realize what nasty, cruel little bastards they are. Style. That's what people remember.”
Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies

"Of all God's creatures, there is only one that cannot be made slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve the man, but it would deteriorate the cat."
Mark Twain

"Some people say that cats are sneaky, evil, and cruel. True, and they have many other fine qualities as well."
Missy Dizick

"I meant," said Ipslore bitterly, "what is there in this world that truly makes living worth while?" Death thought about it. "CATS," he said eventually, "CATS ARE NICE."
Terry Pratchett, Sourcery

"You will always be lucky if you know how to make friends with strange cats."
Ancient Proverb

I know Final Fantasy XIII is really controversial and considered the franchise's shark jumping point, but seriously:

The reveal of Vanille's backstory, and how it's tied with Sazh.

I think FFXIII had a lot of good ideas but they weren't executed...well. I really like Hope but the whole plotline with him and Snow is rather stupid.
And I agree that the Vanille and Sazh bit was probably the most emotional part of the game. That and maybe the Fang bit at the very end.

I had to stop playing for a bit after the reveal of Vanille's backstory, and that scene with Sazh. I was a little too overwhelmed. That may be one of my favorite parts of the entire game.

Almost 7 years later, this is still easily one of my favorite cutscenes.

Actually the whole level is still a favorite, but this is the best cutscene from it.

I would really love this. I think it would be time for the games industry as a whole to actually look back on genres that have fallen out of use. There is only so many times you can rehash Call of Duty surely for it to retain its appeal?

Gone Hunting from BF3 was one of the most fun levels in any FPS I've ever played.

And the end of Portal 2.

Similarly, there's something about the opening cutscene that I loved. The music, the Silent Cartographer feeling you get from it, just the overall sense of epicness

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpLrYUtQwVU

Also, even though the assault was a total failure, I adore this. Plus, the last line is so goosebump inducing, followed by the first chapter of the next level. "It Followed Me Home". :-X

Robbing the Cradle, the Shalebridge Cradle level from Thief 3. One of the creepiest and eeriest parts of any game this century. Play through this level late at night, alone in the house, with no lights on and it will be very spooky and intense, even with the dated graphics.

Nuohmigod.

I.
Was literally.
Just.
About to post this.

Not in all my years have I played through a level that knots my stomach like it. My first playthrough was to your exact recommendations with the added bonus of headphones. I physically screamed for the first time in my gaming life, having already played through the likes of all Silent Hills, Resident Evils, Fatal Frames, Alone in the Darks etc., and to me they were all easy mode compared to The Cradle. It happened when I stepped on one of the creatures I had previously KO'ed in some shadows after I'd gotten lost and accidentally returned to the spot. Haunts don't have SHIT on those inmates, man.

I'll replay old games sometimes and usually the levels that attempt to scare me are toothless on later revisits because you know what to expect. Because scripted jump scares.

It doesn't mean a damn thing if it's The Cradle we're talking about. I dread having to retread through that level, and in its case it gets worse on repeat playthroughs the more you learned about its awful history via the documents scattered throughout. But I can't say anything about it that isn't stated better than in this article: http://gillen.cream.org/thecradle.pdf

You're so cool that I bet you also played System Shock 2. Maybe even 1.

I am really glad that someone else remembers it as fondly (?) as I do! And yes, I have played System Shock 1, many years ago. Sadly, I actually missed out on System Shock 2. That PDF you linked is an interesting record of the impressions left by this level. I hope to one day see another part of a game crafted as well and with as much atmosphere as this!

The entire finale of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon. It's just so over the top, so cheesy, so... 80's, it's hard not to love. I don't really want to spoil it here for anyone who wants to play it, or plans to in the future, but it is SO worth it.

I actually missed out on System Shock 2

Or torrents.

You will also want these 2 mods for some texture updates as well as new and improved character models:

http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=8.msg20#msg20

Hope you find the time to go for it at some point in your life, I know you'll have fun if you do. I was going to post some enemy voice lines in closing but I decided not to spoil a single thing about the experience :nmmlaugh DO conserve your ammo, though.

Like the Thief series, it's one of those games that changes the way you look at games.

Yes. And like I said in the songs thread, the music's reprise at the end is chilling.

Oh, and Mass Effect 3? Sword fleets arrival to Sol. I love a good sense of scale, and at the point in the game where tension is at it's highest, nothing gets the goosebumps going like a thousand starships coming out of FTL
